Chinese Government Effectively Blocks WhatsApp

Part of the deal for China to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001 was an agreement that they would open up their online data services and telecommunications industry to foreign companies. Instead, the past 16 years have seen increasingly restrictive laws and censorship targeting internet access and American companies in particular. The latest on that list is WhatsApp, which the Chinese government "largely" blocked last week, as reported by the New York Times.
